It was the third all-conference award and second straight for Chafeh this season and the first for Smith.

Smith, who last week was cited on the other top performers list, finished with a combined 19 kills, while carrying a hitting percentage of .457, nine blocks and three digs. The 5-10 native from Inglewood, Calif., had a career-high seven blocks to go with seven kills and three digs at Norfolk State (10/28). Smith followed up that performance with a career-high 12 kills, a hitting percentage of .579 and two blocks

Sunshine Alumni Dani Shapherd Breaks School Record!

This Weekend Sunshine Alumni and current UPenn Libero Dani Shephard broke the school record for Digs in a Match at 41!  We are so proud of Dani and all of our Alumn as they continue to dominate at the collegiate level.  Below is the Article from The Daily Pennsylvanian on the match.

Go Dani! and Go Sunshine!

While coach Kerry Carr and the Penn volleyball team were looking mostly to grow as a team on the road against difficult opponents this weekend, the Quakers almost returned to Philadelphia with some big upsets.

Matches against Toledo and Alabama both went to five sets before Penn ultimately fell to both. And a solid showing against No. 25 Ohio State — the Quakers evened up the match at 1-1 before the Buckeyes dropped them 3-1 — made the trip worthwhile.

Though the Red and Blue kept up with the Buckeyes in the first set to a 14-14 tie, they eventually fell, 25-20. The Quakers came back to win the next set, 25-23, before dropping the next two sets, 25-13, and 25-21, respectively.

The next morning, Penn led, 2-1, against Toledo (4-1), but couldn’t hang on. Toledo won the next two sets and the match, 3-2.

In the nightcap, Penn again jumped out to a 2-1 lead, this time against Alabama. Replacing Penn’s all-time digs leader Madison Wojciechowski, sophomore libero Dani Shepherd made some history of her own with a school-record 41 digs.

Despite Shepherd’s performance, the Crimson Tide came from behind to win the fourth and fifth sets for the win.

With the losses, the Quakers fell to 2-4 on the season. Next up for Penn is Rhode Island, the first game of a tripleheader Friday at noon. Penn hosts the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational and also plays UMBC and William & Mary in the event.

Sunshine Alumni Kellie Barnum Named ACC Freshman of the Week

Kellie Barnum, of Sunshine's 2010 18-Westside team, was recently named the Freshman of the Week for the ACC while playing for Boston College.  Below is the press release on her accomplishment.  Congratulations Kellie!

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami senior outside hitter Lane Carico has been named the ACC Volleyball Player of the Week, announced Monday by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Boston College freshman setter Kellie Barnum was named Freshman of the Week.

Carico helped Miami extend its winning streak to four matches and its home court winning streak to 10 straight as she registered 5.50 kills per set and 3.67 digs per set in wins over Wake Forest and Duke, respectively. The native of Manhattan Beach, Calif. hit .389 over the weekend and put down a team-high 33 kills against just five errors on 72 swings for the Canes.

She helped Miami sweep Duke and break a three-match losing skid to the Blue Devils, recording the first win over Duke since a 3-0 decision in 2008. Additionally, Carico became the school’s all-time leader in kills with 1,495, surpassing Karla Johnson for the top honor. In both matches on the weekend, Carico picked up double-doubles to extend her streak to four and increase her total to nine on the year.

The award is the third of the season for Carico. The Hurricanes return to action on Friday when they take on NC State at 7:00 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.

Barnum orchestrated the Boston College offense en route to their first weekend sweep in conference play since the 2007 season with wins over Virginia, 3-1, and Virginia Tech, 3-0. Averaging 12.0 assists per set, the setter helped Boston College hit over 140 points higher than it had been averaging prior to last week’s matches.

The Pacific Palisades, Calif. native distributed a career-high 34 assists and went 4-for-6 with no attack errors in the sweep of the Hokies. The setter returned to establish new career-marks of 50 assists, the most for the Eagles this year, and three blocks in the win over the Cavaliers. The win over Virginia is just the second in program history and first over both teams in four seasons.

The weekly award is the first for Boston College since Sept. 4, 2007, when freshman Audrey Eichler was named ACC Player of the Week. The Eagles will return to action Friday when they hit the road and face Clemson in South Carolina at 7:00
