Sunshine at the 2011 Las Vegas Classic

Kellie Barnum- Senior Ace.

Kellie Barnum, 5-11, Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, California) – When Dani Salka went down with a season-ending knee injury in September, Barnum went from being a nice piece of the national elite Wolverine machine to a key cog, averaging almost 12 assists per game (772 total) in a 5-1 offense. Bound for Boston College, Barnum also had 140 digs for Adam’s Black team, and earned First Team All League and First Team All Area honors.

Emma White, 5-11 OH, Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, California) – An All CIF Team Division 1A selection and the Bay League’s Most Outstanding Player, White had 250 kills and 243 digs while earning All Tournament nods at Ann Kang (Hawaii) and Durango. “Emma is an undeniable leader,” her coach said. “Her skills speak for themselves. She knows how to make it happen, no matter what it takes. From hammering down the line to roll shotting to the only opening on the court, Emma wants to win. Her defense is relentless. And she demands that from her teammates as well. Earning respect through performance, she has really stepped it up in the past two seasons.” Off the court, White has a 3.97 GPA and has taken seven AP or Honors courses during her academic career. She will play at Penn in the fall.

Vegas Day #1:

Sunshine and Skyline played a doozey on Saturday. Thanks to a seeding snafu, this was a rare Day 1 match played between two nationally-ranked teams. Junior Sydney Wright, pictured here, shined for national No. 35 Sunshine, but Skyline, No. 22 nationally, prevailed 19-17 in the third.
